Grammy Flavor of the Week?

On Sunday night while watching the Grammy’s, my friend remarked, “How come none of the Black American Idol Singers are on here?” After thinking for a moment I had to agree that yes, Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood are still celebrated in the public eye, while former Idol sensations of color like Jordyn Sparks, Fantasia, and Ruben Studdard are no where to be found.

Is it that Underwood and Clarkson are simply more talented? I think not. The difference is that in the black, youth culture scene it’s all about discovering the next new thing and what’s hot. Unfortunately, that doesn’t result in staying power. On the other hand, white fans are generally more loyal, watching their favorite performers with unrelenting devotion for years to come. Yes, these are generalizations, but something to ponder. Here’s hoping someone as talented as Miguel can prove me wrong.
